Ready to Learn in Tacoma

KBTC receives a Ready to Learn grant from PBS and the Corportation for Public Broadcasting to bring PBS KIDS transmedia content to children in the Hilltop and Salishan neighborhoods of Tacoma. We have developed a 360-degree approach to informal learning, working with community partners to provide comprehensive support services to children and families.

Partners include:

  • Tacoma Public Schools (TPS)

  • Tacoma Housing Authority (THA)

  • Peace Community Center

  • Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound

  • Children’s Museum of Tacoma

  • Metro Parks Tacoma

  • Pierce County Library

  • Write@253

The Tacoma Housing Authority, Tacoma Public Schools, and KBTC Public Television come together to offer kids participating in the McCarver Special Housing Program the chance to continue their learning outside of school through camps, after-school programs, and KBTC KIDS Nights during parent meetings.

Continuing the work piloted with the Tacoma Housing Authority in the Hilltop Neighborhood, KBTC delivers high-quality educational media to children who live in Salishan and attend Lister Elementary School on Tacoma's East Side. KBTC works with THA and other partner organizations to ensure that children in Salishan have access to educational resources outside school.

KBTC partners with the Children's Museum of Tacoma to bring a hands-on activity for early learners each month. Each session features a different PBS KIDS show, and includes science experiments, letter scavenger hunts, and more. The events are free as part of the museum's pay-as-you-go admission.

A mobile guide to the best in math and literacy games from Ready to Learn! The site offers more than 50 cross-platform games designed to help children ages 2-8 build critical skills and provide support for parents and caregivers. Available in English and Spanish.

Each year, KBTC brings Spring Break Camp to McCarver Elementary School, and now summer camps to Lister Elementary School. These camps invite kids to learn using PBS KIDS content throughout the day, as well as activities from our educational partners.

Mobile Technology Lab

From Wright Park to Salishan, KBTC brings the Mobile Technology Lab, a suite of computers and iPads, directly to you! This gives children and families access to the high-quality educational technology resources from PBS KIDS year-round.
