KBTC Kids Paint to Learn at Mann Elementary – Bringing Family Together for a Night of Expression!

On March 22, 2018, students and their families gathered at Mann Elementary for a night of learning through painting. The evening opened with snacks and an exciting conversation about the kids’ favorite PBS Kids shows. Curious George, Ready Jet Go, Arthur, and Pinkalicious and Peterrific were some of the favorites. When asked why they watch these shows, many of the kids shouted, “To Learn!”

KBTC staff Alejandra and Anna opened by asking the families what happened to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) when art was added, which led them to STEAM. But it wasn’t time to paint yet! The kids then used the scientific process to determine what would occur when they mixed the primary colors of red, blue, and yellow with one another. They hypothesized that they’d create the secondary color palate of orange, green, and purple. Their hypothesis turned out correct and painting ensued!

In a sea of easels and paint brushes, painters used problem solving skills to create new colors, lighten and shade their pieces, and discover new techniques to expand their skill. These talented attendees didn’t just show KBTC staff their skills, they also shared with one another why they created the piece did.

“I just saw it in my head and painted it.” – Josiah on his abstract painting.

“I drew a Tardis because I love Doctor Who. I watch all the episodes, even the older ones.” – Theresa on her source of inspiration.

Paint night is a way for the community to come together and share their lives through expression. As with many forms of art, what the viewer experiences isn’t always what the creator anticipated, and this process surfaced again and again as students explained their pieces and then got others’ thoughts on their work. Paint to Learn is a great way to connect with those around us and see through a lens that isn’t our own.

Be sure to check out the next paint night!
